Exiting Your Wedding: The Getaway Car

We've all seen it before : a car, limousine, classic roadster, sometimes an ordinary American four-door, cruising down the highway with the words "Just Married" spread across the back window. Couples are getting creative these days with their getaway cars and it makes for such a great photo op!

Traditionally the decorating of the getaway car is handled by the groomsmen (but bridesmaids, flowergirls, and ringbearers are usually welcome to help if they would like to), decorating the getaway car can be a chance to get creative and call upon those artistic talents not often used in everyday living. While scribbling "Just Married" on a window is a start, to really do your newlywed friends proud, bring some imagination and fun along and go all out.

THE CLASSICS

Use soap or shaving cream to write "Just Married" along the back, either on a window or on the paint. But please BE CAREFUL: shaving cream might damage the paint, leaving a possibly hefty fine to whomever returns the car. It might be wiser to play it safe and use the window. Soap should be safe no matter where it's used, but depending on the paint job, it might be harder to see on the paint (especially if it's a white limo!).

Another traditional way of dressing up the getaway car is to tie old shoes to the back bumper. In times past, leather was believed to ward off evil spirits, and so old leather shoes were thought to keep the newlyweds safe.  But be aware that some limousine and car rental companies discourage tying anything to the car; always check with the transportation company in advance.

STREAMER SPLASH

We love seeing cars with colorful streamers on them, definitely a great way to splash on some color and definitely one of our favorites! Try to use the color scheme of the wedding.

BALLOONTASTIC

Another way to add color is to take some deep breaths and blow up some balloons or have them delivered to the venue by a party company. Tie the balloons to the outside, or fill up the inside of the car to bursting.  Nothing adds festivity to an occasion quite like rubber balloons, so don't hold back -- the more the merrier!

BOTTLES OF BUBBLY

While you are decorating the getaway car, put a couple bottles of champagne in an ice-filled bucket and stick it on the back seat. It's a classy gesture, one they're sure to appreciate. . Why not also leave a basket of treats in the car. The couple often misses out on much of the wedding feast, and chances are, they'll be hungry as they drive off.

FIRST THINGS FIRST

Please be safe with your decor on the car -- you don't want to do anything that might get the bride and groom a ticket (obstruction of view), or god forbid into an accident. Be wary of covering the windows up too heavily -- either their driver or they will still need to be able to drive. Take a seat behind the wheel during the decorating and see if you'd still be able to drive.

Weddings that Sparkle

Happy Wedding Wednesday, everyone!

Who doesn't love weddings that sparkle?! We think sparklers add such a fun, nice touch to a wedding! Perfect for weddings the week of 4th of July and New Year's Eve.

Love the idea? Here are a few ways to implement them into your special day.

1. {The Sparkler Send-Off} - gather guests outside,  have your wedding planner place several pillar candles in heavy, tall glass-vases outside and light them (this eliminates the need for lighters and a person to light several dozen sparklers). Each guest will hold their sparkler over the flame and proceed to pass on the sparks. Have a disposal place ready, large containers partially filled with sand, provide as a great outlet to put out those sparks. It's a beautifully bright and festive way of bidding adieu to your guests after a joyous reception. Make sure to have your photographer on board with the timeline to be sure to capture the moment. We think this is the perfect way to send the newlyweds off on their first night as husband as wife.

Check out our fun clients Amanda + Kevin, the pictures below are from their May 2013 wedding in Brooklyn, NY @ the beautiful Prospect Park Boathouse.

{FYI} Sparklers are classified by the US Government as “Novelties”. Thus, by definition, sparklers are not defined as consumer fireworks. Because wedding sparklers are classified as a novelty, they can be shipped legally through US Postal System without the need of special and complicated hazmat (hazardous material) paperwork or special packaging.

Most US states allow the use of sparklers and other items classified as novelties, however, there are a few states that preclude their use even though they are not classified as consumer fireworks. It’s always a good idea to check your local state and county laws before enjoying sparklers or including them in your wedding. A good place to start is by calling your local fire department or Fire Marshall directly. When in doubt, you should always call to find out.

Where to find them?  Visit, sparklersonline.com or weddingdaysparkles.com.

Let us know if you will be having sparklers at your wedding, we would love to hear from you!

Wishing you a fun and safe 4th of July - ENJOY!

unplugged weddings

Trend Alert: "Unplugged Weddings"

"Unplugged Weddings" is quite the hot topic for 2013, even Kelly Ripa discussed it this morning!  Couples often ask us how they can avoid their guests from posting photos of their special day right away. We suggest to request, remind or even require that guests go cold turkey on technology during the event.

The trend started about five years ago during the rise of social media, from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest - the list is endless. Celebrities often require the 'no cell phone' rule at their weddings and non-celebrity couples seem to be requesting this policy as well.

Most priests and officiators we work with remind and request for guests to disable and silent their phones before the ceremony, but how to keep guests refrained from their phones throughout the duration of the day/night? Why not have a cellphone coat check?  A place where your guests can leave their phones and visit to check in on voicemails, make necessary calls, etc. Create a lounge area with comfortable seating so if guests need to make calls at least they aren't doing it in the middle of your reception. If you don't feel comfortable asking guests to abandon their phones for the night, putting up the necessary signage stating that this is an "unplugged wedding" and to please turn off your phone and cameras is completely acceptable. However, we cannot guarantee that they will abide by your special request. Some people might frown upon this restraint, but others may thank you for actually being able to take a break from technology for a few hours.

After all, this is what you see at most weddings these days, can you blame the bride and groom for wanting an "unplugged wedding?!"  For all the bridesmaids out there, please just don't post pictures of the bride getting ready to ruin her reveal, you woudn't want her husband to be online and see his bride before she's ready for him to!

Tell us your thoughts on "unplugged weddings," we would love to hear!

Sneak Peek: {Amanda + Kevin} Prospect Park Boathouse Wedding

We wanted to share just a sneak peek from this past Sunday's Prospect Park Boathouse wedding, in Brooklyn, NY with our lovely couple - Amanda + Kevin.

Amanda Eufer + Kevin Lewis said their Ido's outdoors, the weather was magnificent (thank you, mother nature), and we just couldn't resist sharing a few pics (thanks to Jacob Breinholt's speedy delivery)! Amanda is a fashionista/designer, working in the Fashion PR industry in the city, while her husband Kevin is a chef. Both busy in their careers, we were ecstatic to assist with their wedding planning - such an amazing couple! You could definitely feel the love in the air, they were surrounded by their wonderful family and friends on their special day!

Needless to say, Amanda and I (Stacey) hit it off from our very first phone call, both sharing a love for fashion and design, peonies, not too mention having the same taste with just about everything - we knew it was a match made in heaven! A BIG thank you to our former client's sister/bridesmaid, Jessica Grabowski, for referring her co-worker to us - we are so grateful!

The gorgeous Amanda with her lovely bridesmaids and house party - we love this picture so much, we've added it to our opening slideshow on our website!
